Huddersfield Town’s players were ‘crying in the dressing room’ after being denied victory at Bristol City by a controversial penalty in the 101st minute.

The Terriers were seconds away from securing a rare victory before referee Rebecca Welch pointed to the spot. Oliver Turton was adjudged to have handled Cameron Pring's cross in stoppage time and Nakhi Wells converted the penalty.

As a result, Birmingham City - who defeated Coventry City 3-0 on Saturday - climbed above Huddersfield and out of the relegation zone. Huddersfield’s players were left completely dismayed.

"I disagree with the penalty decision but the boys played really well,” Huddersfield manager Andre Breitenreiter. "Now they’re crying in the dressing room because they don’t understand how they haven’t won and its frustrating. It’s hard, but the performance was great."

Blues’ players learned of Bristol City’s equaliser during their post-Coventry celebrations. Gary Rowett’s side still have to play Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium in between games against Rotherham and Norwich.

Rowett said: “When somebody told me the way the scores were going just before the end I wasn’t too worried about it. It feels like we’ve just got to do our bit and not worry about some of the teams around us.

“Of course that last minute equaliser makes the lads feel a bit better and there were one or two quite pleased about it, but the focus has to be on the standard that we showed out there. And the standard we showed out there is when you find that balance between talent and hard work and organisation and diligence, and you get a performance like that.

“That’s something we have to understand and take from it. If you’re a player there was so many positives that there should be a real focus for us to try and replicate that again.”
