Coventry v Ipswich preview

Ipswich have the opportunity to overtake and pull clear of second-placed Leeds tonight, with the two sides both currently locked on 90 points together in a very tight battle for automatic promotion that is guaranteed to go down to the final day.

Kieran McKenna's side head into their penultimate match of the season, and their final away game, having not won any of their last four matches but also managing to avoid defeat in six of their last seven games.

The Suffolk side have the advantage of having a game in hand over Leeds, whose shock 4-0 defeat to QPR on Friday night when they had the chance to pile the pressure on McKenna's side, who now only need a maximum of four points from their final two matches to seal promotion.

The Tractor Boys have drawn each of their last three matches, the most recent of which coming in a 3-3 thriller at play-off chasing Hull, which moved them to the same points total as Leeds.

Ipswich are bidding to return to the Premier League for the first time since they were relegated from the top flight in 2002, having spent four seasons in League One since then, and will become the first team since Southampton in 2013 to earn back-to-back promotions to the top flight.

Coventry's run of just one win in their last seven matches and four defeats in their last five in all competitions has seen their dreams of reaching the play-offs for the second straight season crumble, with another season in the second tier now guaranteed.

Mark Robins' side head into tonight's match ninth in the table, nine points shy of the top six with only two matches to play.

The Sky Blues may have suffered from the distraction of their run to the FA Cup semi finals this season, potentially diverting their attention from the race for the top six which they have been a major contender in since the turn of the year.

Last season saw Coventry suffer a penalty shoot out defeat to Luton in the Championship play-off final, a stage they wanted to reach again this season, albeit with a different outcome, but their form since their FA Cup quarter final win has cost them in the league.

Ipswich won the match when these two teams met previously in the season, but that's their only victory against Coventry in their last five matches, though three of the last four meetings between the sides in the West Midlands have ended in draws.

📝 Coventry v Ipswich betting tips
