Wigan Athletic interested in Nottingham Forest defender

Wigan Athletic are interested in Nottingham Forest defender Danny Fox, according to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.

The Latics have already delved into the January transfer market to sign forward Anthony Pilkington from Cardiff City. Paul Cook is now looking to bolster his defence by signing Fox and West Brom left-back Conor Townsend, as reported by The72 earlier today.

Fox, who is 32 years-old, can play as either a centre-back or left-back. He has played 20 games in all competitions this season for Nottingham Forest but his contract at the City Ground expires at the end of the campaign.

Forest are set to appoint Martin O’Neill as manager and Fox’s future will depend on whether he is in his plans amid interest from Wigan.

Fox is a vastly experienced defender and has played over 450 games in his career. This know-how would come in handy for the Latics and Cook.

He started out at Everton but never broke into the first-team at Goodison Park. Instead he joined Walsall as a youngster after loan spells at Gateshead and Stranrear.

Spells at Coventry City, Celtic, Burnley and Southampton have followed for the defender. Nottingham Forest moved to sign him in 2014. He initially moved to the Reds on loan from the Saints and the move was later made permanent.

Fox has since played over 100 times for Forest in his five seasons at the club and is one of their current longest serving players. A winter departure could be on the cards for him now though will fellow Championship side Wigan looking to pounce.
