Derby County expected to reignite interest in Everton defender this summer

The East Anglian Daily Times has claimed that Derby County are set to reignite their interest in Everton centre-back Matthew Pennington, who was on their radar in the January transfer window.

Derby County were interested in Ipswich Town loanee Matthew Pennington during the January transfer window, but the Everton loanee opted to see out his loan spell at Portman Road and remain with the club until the end of the season.

Upon Derby’s failure to bring in Pennington before the January deadline, the club signed Efe Ambrose on a free transfer to provide some much-needed defensive cover. However, the Nigerian’s contract expires at the end of the season and after making no appearances for the first-team, he may not be with the club next season.

Now, the East Anglian Daily Times has said that the Rams are expected to reignite their pursuit of the Everton centre-back in the upcoming January transfer window.

Pennington’s season has been cut short due to an ankle injury suffered in training and it is almost certain that he has played his last game in an Ipswich Town shirt. Prior to his injury, the 24-year-old was a mainstay in the starting eleven, making 31 appearances for the Tractor Boys in all competitions.

Pennington has spent his entire career with Everton, only leaving the Merseyside club on loan spells. He joined the club’s academy in 2005 and made his full debut in 2015. He has been on loan spells away from Goodison Park with Tranmere Rovers, Coventry City, Walsall, Leeds United and most recently Ipswich Town.
